After having introduced changes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers after the general elections, the National Democratic Alliance-led (NDA) government on July 16 reconstituted the government think tank NITI Aayog. The Aayog now introduces four full-time members and 15 Union Ministers from the BJP and allies of the NDA as ex-officio members or as special invitees. In a Facebook post announcing the move, the government think-tank wrote, “Embracing a vision for holistic development and innovation, NITI Aayog is on a journey of transformative initiatives that promise to redefine India’s future.

MoD to collaborate with SpacePixxel Technologies Pvt Ltd for design & development of miniaturised satellite capable of carrying multiple payloads up to 150 kgs for Indian Air Force.

Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), the flagship initiative of the Ministry of Defence, signed the landmark 350th contract in New Delhi on June 25, 2024. The contract was inked with SpacePixxel Technologies Pvt Ltd for the design and development of a ‘Miniaturised satellite capable of carrying Electro-Optical, Infrared, Synthetic Aperture Radar, and Hyperspectral payloads up to 150 kgs’. This challenge is being led by the Indian Air Force. The 150th iDEX contract was signed in December 2022, and within a span of 18 months, the 350th contract has been signed.

         This 350th iDEX contract enables innovation in space electronics, wherein many payloads earlier deployed on dedicated large satellites are now being miniaturised.

          The modular small satellite will integrate multiple miniaturised payloads as per requirement, providing advantages like faster and economical deployment, ease of manufacturing, scalability, adaptability, and less environmental impact.

NITI Aayog launched initiatives under Atal innovation mission to Foster innovation.

Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog is Government of India’s flagship initiative to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the country and was setup in 2016. Towards this end AIM has taken a holistic approach to ensure creation of a problem-solving innovative mindset in schools and creating an ecosystem of entrepreneurship in universities, research institutions, private and MSME sector. AIM is also currently having its programs reviewed by third party agencies for ensuring continuous improvements.

         The aim is to stimulate a problem-solving innovative mindset within the children of the ATL and nearby communities. Till date, AIM has established 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in Schools across the country.

Pixxel, Sarvam AI, Nirmai Health Analytix among 10 indian startups in WEF's technology pioneer 2024 list.

The list has total 100 leading tech startups which are focused on applying new breakthroughs in AI to develop clean energy solutions, healthcare innovation and progress in biotech, space and neurotechnology. Those having been named on the list in the past include tech giants like Airbnb, Google, Kickstarter and Spotify. Indian Army launches Integrated Generator Monitoring, Control System 'Vidyut Rakshak'.

Vidyut Rakshak is an Internet of Things-enabled integrated generator monitoring, protection and control system. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of interrelated devices that connect and exchange data with other IoT devices and the cloud. The Indian Army has launched 'Vidyut Rakshak', an integrated generator monitoring, protection, and control system developed by the Army Design Bureau (ADB). This tech-based innovation, part of the Army's 'Year of Tech Absorption', utilizes Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor, predict faults, and automate manual operations of all existing generators, regardless of type or make. The system aims to save manpower and signifies the Army's commitment to leveraging technology for transformative change. Vidyut Rakshak was showcased during Aero India 2023 and has already been inducted into the Indian Army.

National Technology Day 11 May,2024: On this day, India successfully tested nuclear bombs in Pokhran.

On May 11, 1998, India marked a significant milestone in its defense and scientific endeavors with the initiation of Operation Shakti, also known as Pokhran II. This operation, led by the government under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, comprised a series of nuclear bomb tests conducted at the Pokhran Test Range. The operation included the detonation of five nuclear devices, classified as Shakti I to Shakti V, with the first being a fusion bomb and the rest fission bombs. This event solidified India's status as a nuclear power and underscored its capability in defense technology. It also emphasized the importance of science and innovation in national security and development.

         India conducted the first test flight of the indigenous aircraft "Hansa-3" in Bangalore on May 11, 1998.

          On the same day, India successfully test-fired the Trishul missile.

          Operation Shakti (Pokhran-II) was initiated on May 11, 1998, marking India's entry into the nuclear club with five detonations, including one fusion bomb and four fission bombs.

HDFC Bank, Atal Innovation Mission empower social sector startups with Rs 19.6 crore grants.

HDFC Bank on Wednesday said it supported social sector startups in India with grants worth Rs 19.6 crore in FY24, in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission (under NITI Aayog). In FY 2023-24, 170 social start-ups received funding via 41 incubators, with a total of Rs 19.6 crore in the ‘Parivartan Start-up Grants programme.’ The focus areas for the 2024 grants included climate innovation, financial inclusion, agriculture and sustainable rural economy, accessible and affordable healthcare, education and livelihood enhancement, gender diversity and inclusion.

UNICEF India appointed Bollywood Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan as its new National Ambassador. She has been associated with Unicef India since 2014, will support the not-for-profit organisation in furthering every child's right to early childhood development, health, education and gender equality. Kareena had earlier served as a Celebrity Advocate for UNICEF India. Besides Kareena, Unicef India has also appointed its first-ever Youth Advocates, who are peer leaders and champions on issues like climate action, mental health, innovations and Girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The four advocates are Gauranshi Sharma from Madhya Pradesh on right to play and disability inclusion; Kartik Verma from Uttar Pradesh on climate action and child rights advocacy; singer Nahid Afrin from Assam on mental health and early childhood development; and Vinisha Umashankar from Tamil Nadu is a budding innovator and STEM pioneer.

The Indigenous Technologies of Thermal camera, designed and developed by CDAC Thiruvananthapuram under InTranSE Program of MeitY, was transferred to M/s Aditya Infotech (CP Plus). It is a step towards Innovation, Science and Technology theme of Viksit Bharat @2047. The thermal Smart camera has an inbuilt Data Processing Unit (DPU) to run various AI based analytics. The indigenised technology is targeted for applications across multiple domains, including Smart cities, Industries, Defence and Health, etc. The field implementation, testing and validation of this camera was done for Road traffic applications.

         Under InTRanSE program of R& D group, MeitY, technologies/product/solution developed for Traffic control, Public Transit, Road Safety, Sensors for traffic Applications etc. have been compiled in a booklet form which was launched for awareness creation.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) organised the first-of-its-kind Telecom Design Collaboration Sprint to foster deep-tech innovation among startups and academic institutions, a PIB press release stated. Through this initiative, DoT aims to drive the growth of the digital ecosystem by facilitating collaboration and innovation among a range of stakeholders. The event, which was held in Bangalore, brought together 15 leading startups, MSMEs, and academic institutions including IIT Madras, C-DOT, and IIT Delhi.

         It was the first-of-its-kind initiative by DoT to foster deep-tech innovation among startups and academic institutions in the telecommunications sector. The goal is to drive growth of the digital ecosystem by facilitating collaboration and innovation among various stakeholders like startups, MSMEs, and academic institutes.

          The event was held in Bangalore and brought together 15 leading entities including startups, MSMEs, IIT Madras, C-DOT (Centre for Development of Telematics), and IIT Delhi.

          By enabling this cross-pollination of ideas and expertise across industry and academia, DoT aims to spur development of cutting-edge telecommunications technologies and solutions.

NABARD partners with Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) Hub to fast-track digital agri lending.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has partnered with Reserve Bank's arm RBIH to put in place a system which will enable faster processing of agricultural loans. NABARD will integrate its e-KCC loan origination system portal with the Public Tech Platform for Frictionless Credit (PTPFC) of Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RBI. NABARD has developed the loan origination system portal to facilitate digital Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan processing for cooperative banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). The digitisation of agricultural lending will ensure instant doorstep delivery of credit to farmers while improving the efficiency of banks, advancing NABARD's mission of fostering rural prosperity. Through the integration with PTPFC, about 351 district and state cooperative banks and 43 RRBs will gain access to a range of services including digital state land records, satellite data, KYC, credit history and transliteration for more effective credit underwriting.

IndusInd Bank has become the first bank to successfully execute RBI’s programmable CBDC pilot in an exchange filing.

IndusInd Bank has become the first bank to successfully execute RBI’s programmable CBDC pilot in an exchange filing. The pilot project is being carried out in partnership with Circularity Innovation Hub India Private Limited (CIH) as a substitute for CBDC, allowing the Bank to plan how money would be used in the end and provide it to farmers instead of producing carbon credits. IndusInd Bank launched the programmable CBDC payout to 50 farmers in the Ratnagiri area of Maharashtra as part of this trial, and it will eventually cover about 1000 farmers. This is a major step forward in the adoption of creative financial solutions for the agriculture industry. As part of this project, IndusInd Bank is creating digital wallets and overseeing CBDC transfers.

Razorpay launched its own Unified Payments Interface (UPI) infrastructure, or 'UPI switch', in partnership with Airtel Payments Bank. The infrastructure is designed to handle up to 10,000 transactions per second, at any given time, and enable five times faster access to UPI innovations for businesses. The infrastructure must be hosted by a bank for businesses to use it. Airtel Payments Bank is Razorpay's banking partner for this. This infrastructure is powered by technology service providers (TSPs) for banks and plays a crucial role in processing UPI transactions at scale. This UPI switch will serve as a platform driving UPI innovations while supporting existing solutions like Turbo UPI and third-party payment solutions.

This innovationaccomplished by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) promises to enhance the vital parameters of rocket engines, including thrust levels, specific impulse, and thrust-to-weight ratios, thereby boosting the payload capacity of launch vehicles. VSSC, continuingits pioneering work in space research, has leveraged advanced materials like Carbon-Carbon (C-C) Composites to create a nozzle divergent that offers exceptional properties. A key feature of the C-C nozzle is its special anti-oxidation coating of Silicon Carbide, which extends its operational limits in oxidizing environments. This substitution is projected to increase the payload capability of the PSLV by 15 kg, a notable enhancement for space missions.
