On February 1, 2025, a new species of phytopathogenic fungus, Epicoccum indicum (Ascomycota, Didymellaceae), associated with an emerging leaf spot disease in Chrysopogon zizanioides (vetiver), was discovered by researchers at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Uttar Pradesh (UP).

      - The discovery was made by Raghvendra Singh, Senior Assistant Professor, and Soumyadeep Rajwar, a research scholar, from the Department of Botany at BHU, UP.

      - The species name is derived from India, where it was first discovered.

Main Point :-   (i) This new species was identified based on morpho-cultural traits and molecular phylogenetic analyses, which involved multilocus sequencing.

(ii) Phytopathogenic fungi are responsible for causing 70-80% of plant diseases, leading to substantial economic losses in agriculture and horticulture, and can be either necrotrophic (feeding on dead tissue) or biotrophic (colonizing living tissue).

In January 2025, researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered two previously unrecorded goby fish species, 'Hemigobius hoevenii' and 'Mugilogobius tigrinus,' at the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh (AP). This marks the first instance of Mugilogobius tigrinus being recorded along India's eastern coastline.

      - Both species belong to the "gobies" group of fish, which are commonly found in estuarine areas, particularly around mangroves.

      - Gobies are small, carnivorous, bottom-dwelling fish found globally, with a higher prevalence in tropical regions.

      - Gobies play a vital role in the ecosystem, acting as indicators of environmental health and occupying various levels within the food chain.

Main Point :-   (i) Out of 135 goby species found along India's coasts, 95 are recorded in mangroves, with 53 species specifically documented in the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary.

(ii) This discovery underlines the rich biodiversity of mangrove ecosystems and their ecological significance.

A new ant species, Tapinoma onaele, has been discovered in the Western Ghats.

In January 2025, researchers from Goa, Dehradun (Uttarakhand), and Karnataka discovered a new ant species called Tapinoma onaele in the Western Ghats, Kodagu district, Karnataka. The species is named after the Kannada word 'onaele', meaning "dried leaves," reflecting its natural habitat in the leaf litter on the forest floor.

      - This discovery adds to other significant finds, such as Protanilla flamma and Probolomyrmex procne, a species that had not been seen in India for 30 years.

      - Goa is the third known location in India where this species has been documented.

Main Point :-   (i) Leaf litter, made up of fallen leaves and organic material, is essential for the ecosystem as it provides shelter and food for various organisms, including ants.

(ii) These ants play a key role in decomposition, soil movement, and pest control, making them vital for forest ecology.

(iii) He also played a key role in helping Cyprus become a member of the European Union (EU) in 2004.

Five New Species of Darwin Wasps Discovered in India and Thailand

Researchers at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) have discovered five new species of Darwin wasps, marking the first record of the Microleptinae subfamily in India. These wasps, known for their parasitic life cycle, include four new species from India—Microleptes chiani, M. gowrishankari, M. sandeshkaduri, and M. tehriensis—and one from Thailand, M. depressus. This study highlights the importance of taxonomic research in understanding biodiversity and ecological functions. The Ichneumonidae family, to which these wasps belong, consists of 42 subfamilies, with Microleptinae being among the smallest. The discovery underscores the need for further research on the distribution and diversity of the Microleptinae subfamily.
