India's GDP to expand at 6.6% in FY25; will fuel NBFCs' growth: Moody's.
Moody's Ratings on Tuesday said the Indian economy is projected to expand 6.6 per cent in the current fiscal year and said strong credit demand fuelled by robust economic growth will support the NBFC sector's profitability. "We expect India's economy to expand 6.6 per cent in the year ended March 2025 (FY25) and 6.2 per cent the following year, and this will lead to robust loan growth at NBFCs, mitigating the impact of rising funding costs on their profitability," Moody's Ratings said.In a commentary on the non-banking finance companies, Moody's said robust economic conditions will help them preserve their asset quality even as rise in interest rates increase the debt burdens of their customers.Aggregate year-on-year loan growth at NBFCs accelerated to 20.8 per cent in September 2023 from 10.8 per cent a year earlier, driven by demand for retail loans, including financing for housing and automobiles.
Indian Economy Projection: Moody's predicts a 6.6% expansion for the Indian economy in FY25, supporting robust credit demand and profitability in the NBFC sector.
NBFC Sector Profitability: Strong economic growth is expected to fuel credit demand, aiding NBFCs' profitability despite rising funding costs.
Asset Quality Preservation: Moody's anticipates that robust economic conditions will help NBFCs maintain asset quality, even amidst increasing interest rates impacting customer debt burdens.

Despite two decades of concerted action, wildlife trafficking persists worldwide with more than 4,000 species affected, says new UNODC World Wildlife Crime Report.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) new World Wildlife Crime Report finds that – despite positive signs in reducing trafficking impacts for some iconic species like elephants and rhinoceros – wildlife trafficking overall has not been substantially reduced over two decades. More consistent enforcement to tackle both supply and demand, effective implementation of legislation, including anti-corruption laws, and stronger monitoring and research are needed. The global scope and scale of wildlife crime remain substantial, the report finds, with seizures during 2015–2021 indicating an illegal trade in 162 countries and territories affecting around 4,000 plant and animal species. Approximately 3,250 of these species are listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). However, some of the species worse affected – like rare orchids, succulents, reptiles, fish, birds and mammals – receive little public attention, though wildlife trafficking appears to have played a major role in their local or global extinctions.
UNODC's World Wildlife Crime Report shows limited progress in curbing wildlife trafficking over two decades.
More enforcement, anti-corruption measures, and research are needed to address the global wildlife trade.
Wildlife trafficking affects over 4,000 species across 162 countries, including lesser-known species leading to local or global extinctions.

International Day of Plant Health - MAY 12TH, 2024
International Day of Plant Health 2024: Plant health, safe trade and digital technology .Each year, over 240 million containers move between countries, carrying goods including plant products, posing biosecurity risks. In addition, about 80 percent of international trade consignments include wood packaging material, providing a pathway for pest transmission. As a result, damages from invasive pest species incur global economic losses of approximately USD 220 billion annually. Protecting plant health across borders is essential by promoting global collaboration and international standards, such as the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs). Innovative solutions like electronic phytosanitary certification (ePhyto) streamline the process, making trade quicker and more secure. The International Day of Plant Health 2024 calls on everyone to raise awareness and take action to keep our plants healthy and ensure food safety and safe trade for sustainable economies and livelihoods.
Biosecurity Risks in Trade: With millions of containers moving globally each year, there's a substantial risk of spreading invasive pests through plant products and wood packaging materials.
Economic Impact: Invasive pest species cause about USD 220 billion in annual global economic losses, underscoring the urgency of safeguarding plant health in international trade.
Call to Action: The International Day of Plant Health 2024 urges global awareness and collaborative efforts to ensure plant health, food safety, and sustainable economies through initiatives like electronic phytosanitary certification (ePhyto) and adherence to international standards.

Nasa-JAXA XRISM mission discovers iron fingerprints in active galaxy NGC 4151.
In a recent scientific breakthrough, the XRISM (X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission), a joint venture between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), successfully detected iron in the active galaxy NGC 4151. Utilizing the Resolve instrument aboard XRISM, crucial data was obtained from the galaxy's core, where a supermassive black hole actively consumes material from its surrounding accretion disk. The spectral analysis conducted by XRISM revealed distinct iron signatures at approximately 6.5 keV, with observed peaks and dips around 7 keV, indicating interactions much more energetic than those detectable in the visible spectrum.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has detected atmospheric gases surrounding 55 Cancri e, a hot rocky exoplanet 41 light-years from Earth.
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has detected atmospheric gases surrounding 55 Cancri e, a hot rocky exoplanet 41 light-years from Earth. This discovery marks the first time an atmosphere has been identified surrounding a terrestrial planet outside our Solar System. “55 Cancri e” is a hot rocky planet orbiting a star 41 light-years from Earth. Its orbit is just 2.25 million km from its host star – so close that the planet’s surface is likely molten. The planet is twice as big as Earth, making it a “super-Earth.” Despite not being able to capture a direct image of 55 Cancri e , JWST’s NIRCam and MIRI instruments are able to detect subtle changes in the light as the planet orbits the star.
