The United Nations pared down India’s GDP growth forecast by 20 basis points (bps) to 5.8 percent for 2023 calendar year. Economic growth in India is projected to moderate in 2023, with higher interest rates weighing on investment and slower global growth weakening exports. The report has projected global trade to contract 0.4 percent and the world economy to grow at 1.9 percent in 2023. For fiscal year 2023-24, however, the agency kept its growth forecast unchanged for India at 6 percent. The report projected India’s retail inflation to decelerate to 5.5 percent in 2023 from 7.1 percent in 2022 as global commodity prices moderate and slower currency depreciation eases imported inflation. In India, the additional interest payments would amount to 8.7 percent of total government expenditures. Global economic growth is projected to slow to 1.9 percent in 2023 from 3 percent in 2022, marking it one of the lowest growth forecasts in recent decades.

The Indian Railways has introduced the ‘Ideal Train Profile’ to maximise the capacity utilisation and revenue generation in reserved mail express trains by regularly analysing the demand pattern of each individual train. The Ideal Train Profile is seat capacity optimization decision support, which is done because the number of ticket class combinations on a single train journey can exceed 5,000. The deployment of Ideal Train Profile utility provides the railway administrators in the passenger profile cells in various zonal railways, a decision support tool to shorten the time taken for seat distribution analytics of a train. The pilot project was started on seven zonal railways – Eastern, Central, Northern, Southern, South Central, Western, and West Central Railway. The pilot project has so far been rolled out in over 200 trains in Indian Railways. The AI module has been developed by an in-house team led by R Gopalakrishnan of the Centre of Railways Information System (CRIS). The module is completed after an extensive effort by the team for over two years. The facility will help to enhance confirmed seat availability and increase the occupancy of a train by 5 percent to 6 percent.
