Indian Coast Guard Day Celebrated on 1st February 2025 .

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Day is celebrated annually on 1st February across India to commemorate the establishment of the ICG, India's maritime armed force under the Ministry of Defence (MoD).


      - 1st February 2025 marks the observance of the 49th Raising Day of the ICG.


      - In 1977, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of the ICG, with 2 frigates and 5 patrol boats transferred from the Indian Navy (IN).

     

Main Point :-   (i) The ICG was formed on February 1, 1977, by the Coast Guard Act of 1978 of the Parliament of India to combat sea-based smuggling that affected India's economy.

      (ii) The 1st Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS), Kuthar (Pennant No. 31), was transferred from the IN to the ICG in 1978.

(iii) The Indian Parliament declared ICG Day on August 18, 1978. ICG was formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister (PM) Morarji Desai on 19th August 1978.

World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day was observed on 30 January 2025.

World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day (WNTDD) is observed every year on January 30 to raise awareness about the severe impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) on the world’s most vulnerable populations.


      - The theme for World NTDs Day 2025 is "Unite. Act. Eliminate," which highlights the collective effort needed to eliminate these diseases.


      - WNTDD was first announced by the Crown Prince Court of Abu Dhabi, UAE, at the 2019 Reaching the Last Mile Forum.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The first observance took place on January 30, 2020.

      (ii) On May 31, 2021, the 74th World Health Assembly (WHA) officially designated January 30th as WNTDD through decision WHA74(18). This proposal was supported by countries like UAE, Oman, Brazil, and others.

(iii) As of December 2024, 54 countries had successfully eliminated at least one NTD.

Shaheed Divas (Martyrs' Day) was observed on 30 January 2025.

Martyrs' Day, also called Sarvodaya Day or Shaheed Diwas, is observed every year on January 30 across India to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. This day also marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the 'Father of the Nation.'


      - January 30, 2025, will mark the 77th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) Martyrs' Day was officially declared in 1949, a year after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination on January 30, 1948, to remember his sacrifices and the sacrifices of other freedom fighters.

      (ii) Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948, at Birla House, New Delhi.

International Day of Commemoration in Memory of Holocaust Victims Observed on January 27, 2025.

The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, also known as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, is observed annually on 27 January across the globe to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, also referred to as the Shoah.


      - The theme for the 2025 International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust is "Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights," emphasizing the importance of remembering past atrocities to uphold dignity and human rights.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) On November 1, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/60/7, proclaiming January 27 as the annual International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.

      (ii) The first-ever International Holocaust Remembrance Day was observed on January 27, 2006.

World Leprosy Day Observed on 26 January 2025.

World Leprosy Day (WLD) is observed annually on the last Sunday of January worldwide to raise awareness about leprosy, celebrate the resilience of those affected, and combat stigma and discrimination. The day also serves as a call to eradicate leprosy and improve the lives of those impacted.


      - January 26, 2025, marks the 72nd observance of WLD.


      - The theme for WLD 2025 is "Unite. Act. Eliminate." It emphasizes the need for governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and individuals to collaborate in eliminating the disease and its associated stigma.

      - In 2024, WLD was observed on January 28, and in 2026, it will be observed on January 25.

Main Point :-   (i) In India, WLD is observed on January 30 every year, coinciding with the death anniversary (January 30, 1948) of Mahatma Gandhi, in recognition of his legacy, social justice efforts, and advocacy for people affected by leprosy.

      (ii) WLD was established in 1954 by Raoul Follereau, a French philanthropist and writer, to raise global awareness about leprosy.

(iii) The first-ever WLD was observed on January 31, 1954 (last Sunday of January).

      - The 2nd International Day of Clean Energy will be observed on 26th January 2025.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) On January 26, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared the International Day of Clean Energy through resolution A/77/327, recognizing the need to accelerate the global transition to clean and sustainable energy.

      (ii) The inaugural International Day of Clean Energy was celebrated on 26th January 2024.

National Tourism Day Observed Annually on January 25 to Promote Tourism in India.

National Tourism Day is observed annually across India on January 25 to highlight the significance of tourism in the country's economy. The day emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting various tourist destinations across India. The theme for National Tourism Day 2025 is "Tourism for Inclusive Growth," aligning with India's broader tourism vision.


      - One of the key events linked to this vision is the Maha Kumbh Mela, held from January 13 to February 26, 2024, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh (UP), which is one of the world's largest religious gatherings.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) National Tourism Day was instituted by the Government of India (GOI) on January 25, 1949, marking the formation of the Ministry of Tourism (MoT).

      (ii) The Tourist Traffic Committee, established in 1948, initiated the celebration of "National Tourism Day" to promote tourism in India.

National Voters' Day (NVD) Observed Annually on January 25 to Promote Voter Awareness and Participation.

National Voters' Day (NVD) is celebrated annually on January 25, commemorating the establishment of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in 1950. The day focuses on raising awareness about the significance of voting and encouraging active voter participation, with special emphasis on registering youth voters.


      - The theme for NVD 2025 is "Nothing Like Voting, I Vote For Sure," continuing from the 2024 theme, aiming to motivate citizens, especially the youth, to take part in the electoral process.


      - 2025 marks the 15th National Voters' Day and celebrates 75 years of service by the ECI.

      - The first-ever National Voters' Day was celebrated in 2011 to mark the foundation day of the ECI, and the celebration was approved by the Cabinet, under Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Main Point :-   (i) On January 25, 2025, a national event was hosted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi. The event featured President Droupadi Murmu as the Chief Guest and Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Ministry of State (MoS), Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) as the Guest of Honour.

      (ii) During the event, President Droupadi Murmu was presented with the ECI publication "Belief in the Ballot: Human stories shaping India's 2024 elections."

Parakram Diwas: Subhash Chandra Bose is honoured on 23 January.

Parakram Diwas, also known as the "Day of Valour," is celebrated annually across India on 23 January to honor the birth anniversary of the renowned Indian freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose, fondly referred to as Netaji.


      - The 23 January 2025 marks the 128th birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) The 1st-ever Parakram Diwas was observed on 23 January 2021, commemorating Netaji's 124th birth anniversary.

      (ii) The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), located in Hyderabad, Telangana, has been selected for the prestigious Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2025 in the institutional category, recognizing its exceptional contributions to disaster management.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Raising Day 2025 Celebrated on January 19.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Raising Day is observed every year on January 19 to commemorate the establishment of the NDRF under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The year 2025 marks the observance of the 20th NDRF Raising Day.


      - The NDRF is a specialized emergency response force trained to handle both natural disasters like floods, cyclones, and earthquakes, and man-made disasters such as chemical spills and terrorist incidents.


      - The 20th NDRF Raising Day celebrations took place at the 10th Battalion of NDRF located in Kondapavuluru, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh (AP), with Union Minister Amit Shah, MoHA, as the Chief Guest.

      - During the event, Union Minister Amit Shah inaugurated various projects and laid foundation stones for initiatives valued at approximately Rs 220 crore to strengthen disaster management infrastructure.

Main Point :-   (i) Notable inaugurations included the National South Campus of the Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) in Andhra Pradesh and the 10th Battalion of NDRF in Kondapavuluru, AP.

      (ii) The event also featured the inauguration of the Regional Response Centre (RRC) at the Supaul Campus (9th Battalion) in Andhra Pradesh and the foundation stone laying for an Integrated Indoor Shooting Range at the National Police Academy (NPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana, costing Rs 27 crore.

(iii) These developments emphasize the government's focus on bolstering disaster response capabilities and providing the NDRF with advanced infrastructure to handle emergencies efficiently.

India Observes 9th Armed Forces Veterans' Day on January 14.

Armed Forces Veterans' Day is celebrated annually across India on 14 January to honor and recognize the service of Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, the 1st Indian Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Indian Armed Forces. He retired on this day in 1953 and led Indian forces to victory in the 1947 war.


      - 14 January 2025 marks the 9th Armed Forces Veterans' Day observance.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) The Armed Forces Veterans' Day was first celebrated in 2017.

      (ii) The day is observed with programs at major military stations and cities, featuring ceremonial parades and gatherings of veterans, Veer Naris (the widows of our soldiers), and their families.

National Youth Day was celebrated on 12 January 2025.

National Youth Day, also called 'Rashtriya Yuva Divas' in Hindi and 'Vivekananda Jayanti', is celebrated every year on January 12 across India to honor the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. He was a Hindu spiritual leader, philosopher, and social reformer who played a significant role in shaping modern India.


      - January 12, 2025, marks the 162nd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) In 1984, the Government of India (GoI) declared Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary as National Youth Day to honor his teachings and ideals.

      (ii) The first National Youth Day was observed on January 12, 1985.

(iii) On January 11, 2025, Union Minister Mansukh L. Mandaviya from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) inaugurated the 'Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue' at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

National Road Safety Week Day Observed from January 11 to 17,2025.

The National Road Safety Week, organized by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), is observed annually across India from January 11-17 to raise awareness about road safety. The week emphasizes the importance of responsible driving, pedestrian safety, and improved road infrastructure to reduce accidents and save lives.


      - The 36th National Road Safety Week is being observed in 2025.


      - The first National Road Safety Week was introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in 1989.

      - The first National National Road Safety Month (RSM) was observed in 2021.

Main Point :-   (i) National Road Safety Month (RSM) is an annual observance introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to raise awareness among citizens and road users about the critical challenges of road safety.

      (ii) The annual observance is led by the MoRTH to promote and raise awareness about essential road safety measures.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025 was celebrated on January 9.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), also known as Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Day, is celebrated every two years on January 9. It is an important event that recognizes the contributions of the Overseas Indian community (Indian diaspora) in India's development.


      - PBD has been observed every year on January 9 since 2003 to mark the day in 1915 when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, returned to India from South Africa to lead the country’s freedom struggle.


      - From 2015 onwards, the PBD Convention has been held every two years with theme-based conferences.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The PBD Convention, a key event organized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was first introduced in 2003 by the Government of India (GoI), led by the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It aims to honor and connect with the Indian diaspora.

      (ii) The 18th PBD Convention took place for the first time in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 8 to 10, 2025.

(iii) The theme for PBD Convention 2025 was "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat" (Developed India).

AICTE has declared 2025 as the 'Year of AI' to position India as a global leader in artificial intelligence.

The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has declared 2025 as the "Year of Artificial Intelligence (AI)" to establish India as a global leader in AI.


      - This initiative will be adopted by all AICTE-approved institutions, impacting around 14,000 colleges and benefiting 40 million students across the country.


      - Institutes will take an AI Affirmation Pledge to make India a global leader in AI through innovation, ethics, and education.

      - A nationwide campaign called "AI for All: The Future Begins Here" will be organized. It will include workshops, hackathons, and guest lectures to raise awareness about AI’s potential among students. The AICTE will also organize workshops and certification programs to train faculty in AI education.

Main Point :-   (i) Institutes will be encouraged to introduce interdisciplinary courses and research programs related to AI. They will also be encouraged to set up AI labs with industry collaboration and promote socially responsible AI practices.

      (ii) Students will gain real-time experience through internships, projects, and mentorships, with collaborations from global companies like Adobe, CISCO, and IBM.

(iii) The best-performing institutions will be recognized by AICTE and will serve as role models for AI excellence for other institutes.

World Hindi Day 2025 is celebrated on January 10.

World Hindi Day, or Vishwa Hindi Diwas, is celebrated every year on January 10 to highlight the importance of the Hindi language and its role in connecting people around the world.


      - The day is observed to honor Hindi’s global significance, showcase its cultural diversity, and promote it as an international language.


      - The theme for this year is "A Global Voice of Unity and Cultural Pride," which aims to encourage linguistic exchange and global interaction through the use of Hindi.

      - Hindi Diwas, also known as Hindi Day, is celebrated annually on September 14 to mark the adoption of Hindi, written in Devanagari script, as one of India’s 22 official languages. In 1949, Hindi was first spoken at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.

Main Point :-   (i) Hindi, derived from Persian and a descendant of Sanskrit, is the third most spoken language globally, with 4.46% of the population speaking it. Declared the official language of India in 1950 under Article 343, it is also one of the 22 scheduled languages in the Indian Constitution.

      (ii) The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) celebrates this day globally by organizing various events and activities through Indian embassies and cultural centers.

(iii) The first-ever World Hindi Day was celebrated on January 10, 2006, to mark the anniversary of the first World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on January 10, 1975.

Earth's Rotation Day Celebrated on January 8,2024.

Earth's Rotation Day is celebrated worldwide on January 8 to emphasize the importance of Earth's rotation. This day marks the anniversary of the scientific demonstration by French physicist LΓ©on Foucault in 1851.


      - January 8, 2025, will mark the 174th anniversary of Foucault's demonstration. The day honors Foucault’s first public display of Earth's rotation in Paris, showcasing its scientific significance.


      - Rotation refers to the Earth spinning around its own axis. The Earth completes one full rotation every 23 hours and 56 minutes (approximately 24 hours).

      - Earth rotates from West to East, causing the day and night cycles, with one complete rotation representing one Earth Day, while the Sun and Moon appear to move from East to West across the sky.

Main Point :-   (i) In 470 BC, ancient Greeks believed Earth rotated on its own axis, and later, in the 16th century, Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus proposed the heliocentric model, suggesting that Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the Sun.

      (ii) Galileo Galilei confirmed Earth's rotation in 1610 through his observations of Jupiter's moons, while French physicist LΓ©on Foucault provided clear evidence in 1851 using the Foucault Pendulum experiment, demonstrating Earth's rotation for the first time with laboratory equipment.

(iii) Earth rotates on an imaginary axis through the North and South Poles, with a speed of about 1,670 km/h at the equator. The Earth's diameter is 12,714 km from pole to pole and 12,756 km across the equator.

World Day of War Orphans is observed annually on January 6 across the globe to raise awareness about the challenges faced by children who have been orphaned due to wars and the trauma they experience.


      - The day addresses the social, psychological, and physical obstacles faced by war orphans, protects their rights and well-being, and emphasizes the need for global attention and support.


     

     

Main Point :-   The observance was proposed by the French organization SOS (Societas Socialis) Enfants en DΓ©tresse (SOS Children in Distress), aiming to protect children from abuse and mistreatment.

World Braille Day Observed on January 4, 2025.

On January 4, 2025, the world observes the 7th World Braille Day, commemorating the 216th birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the 19th-century French inventor of the Braille writing system. This day is observed globally to highlight the importance of Braille as a communication tool for individuals who are blind or partially sighted.


      - World Braille Day aims to raise awareness about Braille’s role in promoting education, encouraging independence, and ensuring equality for visually impaired individuals.


     

     

Main Point :-   (i) The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established World Braille Day on December 17, 2018, through the adoption of resolution A/RES/73/161.

      (ii) The first World Braille Day was observed on January 4, 2019.

Sikkim recently celebrated the Annual Kagyad Dance Festival in Gangtok.

Sikkim celebrated the annual Kagyad Dance festival with great enthusiasm at Tsuklakhang Palace in Gangtok, honoring the eight Tantric deities known as Kagyad.


      - The festival, observed on the 28th and 29th days of the 10th month in the Tibetan calendar (December), is a unique Buddhist event.


      - The festival is primarily celebrated by Buddhists in monasteries, including the Old Rumtek Monastery, Phodong Monastery, and Tshuklakhang Palace.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Monks, dressed in traditional attire with ceremonial swords and masks, perform graceful dances to the rhythm of drums and trumpets, depicting stories from Buddhist mythology, particularly those of Guru Padmasambhava, who introduced Buddhism to Sikkim.

      (ii) Sakewa Silior is another dance form specific to the Kirat Rai (Khambu) community of the Eastern Himalayan region, found in Nepal, Bhutan, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim, and Northeast India. This dance mimics the movements and sounds of birds, animals, and nature, holding significant cultural meaning.

Good Governance Day will be observed on 25 December 2024.

Good Governance Day, also called Sushasan Diwas in Hindi, is celebrated every year on December 25th across India to honor the birth anniversary of the former (10th) Prime Minister, Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The day aims to raise awareness about government accountability and administration among the people.


      - December 25, 2024, will mark the 11th Good Governance Day and the 100th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.


      - The theme for Good Governance Day 2024 is "India's Path to a Viksit Bharat: Empowering Citizens through Good Governance and Digitalisation."

      - The 4th Good Governance Week (Sushasan Saptah) is observed annually from December 19th to 25th.

Main Point :-   (i) In 2014, the Government of India (GOI) declared December 25th as Good Governance Day to honor Atal Bihari Vajpayee's legacy.

      (ii) The first Good Governance Day was observed on December 25, 2014.

(iii) Good Governance Day 2024 witnessed key initiatives, including the launch of the 'Prashasan Gaon ki Ore' campaign, 'Viksit Panchayat Karmayogi' for grassroots governance, the 'Rashtraparv Website & Mobile App,' and an MoU between Gujarat and SAC-ISRO for enhanced water resource management.

Veer Bal Diwas will be observed on 26 December 2024.

Veer Bal Diwas is observed every year on December 26 across India to honor the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas, the four sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Sikh Guru, who sacrificed their lives in the 17th century.


      - 2024 marks the 3rd celebration of Veer Bal Diwas.


      - On January 9, 2022, during the Prakash Purab (birth anniversary) of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the Prime Minister announced that December 26 would be celebrated as 'Veer Bal Diwas.'

      - The first Veer Bal Diwas was observed on December 26, 2022.

Main Point :-   (i) The national event for Veer Bal Diwas 2024, held on December 26, 2024, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, was attended by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, along with Union Minister Annapurna Devi (Ministry of Women and Child Development, MoW&CD) and other dignitaries.

      (ii) On December 26, 2024, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) 2024 awards to 17 children (7 boys and 10 girls) from 14 states/UTs who were selected for the honor. Each recipient received a medal, certificate, and citation booklet.

(iii) Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the "Suposhit Gram Panchayat Abhiyan" during the Veer Bal Diwas 2024 event.

National Consumer Rights Day Observed on 24 December.

National Consumer Rights Day, also known as Bharatiya Grahak Diwas or National Consumer Day, is observed annually across India on 24 December to raise awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities.


      - On the occasion of National Consumer Day 2024, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution & Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MOCAF&PD), inaugurated and launched several pro-consumer initiatives at an event held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.


      - The day marks the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) of 1986, which received the assent of the President of India on 24 December 1986.

      - The first National Consumer Rights Day was observed on 24 December 1986.

Main Point :-   (i) The theme for National Consumer Day 2024 was "Virtual Hearings & Digital Access to Consumer Justice."

      (ii) On the occasion of National Consumer Day 2024, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MOCAF & PD) and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, inaugurated and launched several pro-consumer initiatives at an event held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

National Farmer's Day was observed on December 23.

National Farmer's Day, also called Kisan Diwas, is celebrated every year on 23rd December across India. The day honors the significant contribution of farmers to the social and economic development of the country and marks the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th Prime Minister (PM) of India.

Chhattisgarh launches the 'Bijli Sakhi Yojana' to empower women in Jashpur District.

The Chhattisgarh government launched the 'Bijli Sakhi Yojana' to empower women in the tribal-dominated Jashpur district and assist the electricity department with meter reading tasks in remote villages.


      - This pilot project, introduced by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister (CM) Vishnu Deo Sai, trains women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to take on meter reading responsibilities in areas that are hard for the department to access.


      - Under the scheme, 21 women were selected, trained, and appointed as 'Bijli Sakhis'. Each woman earns Rs 4,000-6,000 per month for their work.

     

Main Point :-   (i) This initiative not only provides economic empowerment by enabling women to earn an additional Rs 50,000-60,000 annually, but also supports the Central Government’s vision of helping women become 'Lakhpati Didis' (women who earn one lakh).

      (ii) This program helps fill the gap in meter reading in 21 villages, benefiting both the electricity department and the women involved.

(iii) By empowering these women, the scheme provides a sustainable source of income while contributing to the region's development.

      - In 2001, the World Toilet Organisation (WTO), a global non-profit organisation established to improve toilet and sanitation conditions across the globe, declared 19th November as World Toilet Day (WTD).


      - The WTO was established by Jack Sim, a philanthropist from Singapore, on 19th November 2001.

      - On 24 July 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution (A/RES/67/291) and declared 19th November of every year as "World Toilet Day."

National Press Day (NPD) is annually observed across India on 16th November to commemorate the day on which the Press Council of India (PCI) started its function as the moral watchdog to ensure that the press maintains high standards and is not fettered by any form of influence or threats.


      - The 1st Press Commission held in 1954 concluded that a statutory authority body with people connected with the industry should be created to maintain professional ethics in journalism.


      - Following this, the Press Council of India (PCI) was established on 4th July 1966 under the Press Council Act of 1965 and started its functions on 16th November 1966.

      - PCI is a statutory quasi-judicial autonomous authority re-established in 1979 under an Act of Parliament, the Press Council Act, 1978.

      (ii) According to Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontiΓ¨res - RSF)'s 22nd World Press Freedom Index (WPFI 2024), India ranked 159th position out of 180 countries with a score of 31.28.

(iii) Justice Janardan Raghunath Mudholkar (JR Mudholkar) was appointed as the 1st chairman of PCI. He served as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India from 1960 to 1966.

The inaugural UN International Day to Combat Transnational Organized Crime was observed on 15 November 2024.

The first-ever United Nations (UN)'s International Day for the Prevention of and Fight against All Forms of Transnational Organized Crime (TOC) was observed across the globe on 15th November to raise awareness about the dangers of various types of transnational organized crime and to strengthen global collaboration to address them.


      - In March 2024, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 78/267 designated 15th November on each year as the International Day for the Prevention of and Fight against All Forms of TOC.


      - It recognized that preventing and combating transnational organized crime is essential for achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

      - It is an annual event organised by the Chartered Institute of Quality (CQI).

      - The idea of World Quality Week (WQW) was first proposed by the American Society for Quality (ASQ) in 2010.

Main Points:-   (i) The idea of WKD was introduced in 1997 when the World Kindness Movement (WKM), a group of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) focused on kindness, hosted the first conference in Tokyo, Japan to unite like-minded organizations worldwide.

      (ii) After the formation of the WKM, WKD was established as an annual observance in 1998.

(iii) The World Kindness Movement includes representatives from over 27 countries and was registered as an NGO in Switzerland in 2019.

Public Service Broadcasting Day (PSBD), also referred to as Jan Prasaran Diwas, is celebrated every year on 12th November to mark the historic occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's visit to the All India Radio (AIR) studios in New Delhi in 1947.


      - After the Partition of India and Pakistan, Mahatma Gandhi visited the AIR studio at Broadcasting House, New Delhi, to address the refugees from Pakistan who were camped at Kurukshetra, Haryana.


      - A programme was organised on 12 November 1997 to commemorate the completion of 50 years of Gandhi's AIR journey.

      - In 2001, November 12 every year was declared as Public Service Broadcasting Day. The event was conceptualised by Suhas Borkar, convener of Jan Prasaran.

Main Points:-   (i) AIR is a public service broadcaster of India and the radio vertical of Prasar Bharati.

      (ii) AIR's Home Service consists of 479 stations spread across India, reaching about 92% of the area and 99.19% of the total population.

136th Birth Anniversary of CV Raman is celebrated on 7th November 2024.

7th November 2024 marks the celebration of the 136th Birth Anniversary of Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman, known for his work in light scattering.


      - He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 "for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect named after him 'Raman Effect'".


      - The Raman effect is a phenomenon in which light changes its wavelength when it interacts with matter.

      - He was honoured with India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 1954.

Main Points:-   (i) C. V. Raman was born on 7th November 1888 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu .

      (ii) He began his career as an Asst. Accountant Gen. in the Indian Fin. Service but stayed associated with scientific research.

      - IDOR was established in 2011 as a follow-up to EDOR.

National Cancer Awareness Day is Observed on 7 November 2024.

National Cancer Awareness Day is observed annually across India on November 7 to raise awareness about the prevention, detection, and treatment of various types of cancer.


      - NCAD aims to educate the public on early detection, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, and improving access to quality cancer care.


      - NCAD was initiated in India in September 2014 by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the former Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare.

      - A committee was formed, and it was declared that November 7 of every year would be observed as NCAD to raise awareness about early detection and the avoidance of cancer-causing behaviors.

Main Points:-   (i) The first NCAD was observed on November 7, 2014.

      (ii) A study by ICMR-NCDIR projects a 13.5% rise in cancer cases in Northeast India by 2025, with an estimated 57,131 cases, including 30,985 in males and 26,146 in females.

(iii) According to data from the National Cancer Registry Programme, over 800,000 new cancer cases are expected each year, with tobacco-related cancers accounting for 35-50% of all cancers in men and 17% in women.

Telangana Government Announces 'Sadar Sammelan' as a State Festival.

On 1st November 2024, Telangana Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari officially declared the Sadar Sammelan as the state festival of Telangana. The state government has instructed the Commissioners of CHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) and all District Collectors (except Hyderabad District) to annually celebrate the Sadar Sammelan as a State Festival.


      - The Sadar Sammelan, held two days after Diwali, is a lively event organized primarily by the Yadav community since 1946.

Andhra Pradesh Government Unveils 'Deepam 2.0' Scheme as Diwali Gift for Women.

Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister (CM) Chandrababu Naidu launched the 'Deepam 2.0' scheme as a Diwali gift in Edupuram, AP. The initiative will provide 3 free Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders per year to eligible women starting from 31st October 2024.


      - The Deepam (light) scheme is part of the "super six" poll promises made by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ahead of the 2024 elections.


      - The AP government will provide 3 gas cylinders free of cost to eligible beneficiaries at the rate of one every four months.

     

Main Points:-   (i) The 1st cylinder can be applied for before 31st March 2025, the 2nd cylinder can be booked from 1st April to 31st July 2025, and the 3rd cylinder from 1st August to 30th November 2025.

      (ii) The 'Deepam' scheme will cost the state government Rs 2,684 crore annually, totaling Rs 13,423 crore over the next 5 years.
